Slide 37 Content

Medicine Cabinets can be located anywhere in the home. However, as a device that seems simple in its design, new thinking is required to ameliorate the problem of reach.

As shown previously, anyone but the tallest in the older population will have significant difficulty gaining access to a top shelf. It is possible that a horizontal, rather than vertical, configuration of the medicine cabinet- below other shelving and below mirrors would have some merit.

Further, location of the "medications" should be reconsidered. One rule... medications should only be placed in proximity to a phone!!

Narration of Slide 37

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 183 KB) or read the transcript:

Medicine cabinets are a misnomer for the storage that is necessary in a bathroom. They can be very inaccessible depending upon where they are mounted - frequently determined by builders who mount the cabinet at standing height. Upper shelves can be very hard to reach...except for the tallest individuals.
