Narration of Slide 25

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 279 KB) or read the transcript:

The interior of any home provides the key to extended aging in place. Many older homes were built before standards were in place that govern the tread to riser relationship of a staircase. There are great variations in older homes with some extremely difficult to negotiate.

In this 20 year old home, there is a hand rail on both sides of the staircase that will become more and more important in negotiating the stairs as time passes - until the prospect of being non-ambulatory and the loss of use of a second story.
