Assistive technology is amply described and illustrated on the immensely useful web site, assistivetech.net as "devices and aids (that) can help a person with a disability perform activities that might otherwise be difficult or not be possible." The development of such assistive devices has grown rapidly in the second half of the 20th century.
Older adults with disabilities utilize assistive technology to a greater degree than any other population age segment. People over the age of 45 acquire and use 75% of all of the assistive technology produced.
