... these statistics can be further refined to show the distinction between moderate and severe disability. Again, after the 44th year, severity begins to outdistance moderate disability and in the 85th year it affects over 68% of the old-old population. To understand this array of statistics, disabilities are as defined by the Bureau of the Census. For persons 15 years old and over, disability covers limitations in functional activities (seeing, hearing, speaking, lifting and carrying, using stairs, and walking), in ADL's or activities of daily living (getting around inside the home, getting in or out of a bed or chair, bathing, dressing, eating, and toileting), and in IADL's or instrumental activities of daily living (going outside the home, keeping track of money or bills, preparing meals, doing light housework, and using the telephone).
